Philadelphia Indian weddings have a generosity to them: three-day celebrations where the sangeet is in Cherry Hill, the ceremony is at a temple in Chalfont at nine in the morning, and the reception fills a ballroom on Broad Street until the venue turns the lights on. Surya has photographed that arc across the Delaware Valley for more than a decade, and the couples who find us from Center City, Bryn Mawr, King of Prussia and Voorhees come for a photographer who is never surprised by the schedule.

Photography that knows the ceremony before it happens

The kanyadaan, the mangalsutra, the seventh phera, the vidaai — each lasts seconds and none of them repeat. Surya grew up inside these traditions and has documented more than 400 celebrations — Gujarati, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali and fusion — so the important second is anticipated and kept, not discovered afterwards in someone's phone.

We blend documentary storytelling — the real laughter, the cousins holding the groom hostage over his shoes, the grandmother who cannot stop smiling — with refined editorial portraiture that belongs on a wall. Philadelphia's architecture makes the second part easy: marble staircases, columned halls, the river at dusk.

Philadelphia is just over an hour from our studio in Flemington, New Jersey, and travel across the region is included in every collection. Venues we know well include:

The most common Philadelphia timeline is also the most demanding: a ceremony at a temple early in the morning, portraits in the late-morning light, an outfit change, and a Center City reception that runs past midnight. We build the day around the drive and the light — two photographers at the ceremony, portraits scheduled where the sun will actually be, and a cinematographer who has the reception lit properly before the first guest arrives.
