Philadelphia is an hour from our studio and a city I photograph in every season. Its Indian weddings tend to be a little more relaxed than New York's and a little more historic than New Jersey's — ceremonies in rooms with a hundred years on the walls, receptions that run late, and a community that has favourite venues for good reasons. Here they are, with what I see through the lens at each one.
The Center City landmarks
The Bellevue
The grand old hotel on Broad Street. The ballroom is layered and gilded, with a mezzanine that gives us a vantage point over a stage entrance no ground-level photograph can match. The Avenue of the Arts outside is the portrait location — early in the morning it belongs to us.
Crystal Tea Room
The ninth-floor ballroom in the Wanamaker Building, restored to its 1911 detail. Tall windows on two sides mean a daytime ceremony is lit by the city rather than by us, which is a rare gift in a ballroom. For a reception the chandeliers do the work; we add a little light for the dance floor and let the room be the room.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art
For couples who want the city's icon in the photographs. The steps at dawn, the Great Stair Hall inside — it is not a venue for a 600-guest baraat, but for a ceremony and dinner with a sense of occasion there is nothing else like it in the region.
The rooms built for the entrance
The Cescaphe venues — Cescaphe Ballroom, Vie, Tendenza, The Lucy
One family of venues that has quietly become the South Asian wedding address in the city. Each room is different — the Ballroom is classic, Vie is vast and modern with a ceiling that takes a tall mandap, Tendenza is a converted warehouse with brick and beams, The Lucy is contemporary and glass-fronted. What they share is a team that runs a stage entrance, a long reception and a dhol without blinking. Vie's scale suits the biggest guest lists; Tendenza gives the most texture in photographs.
The hotels for a full weekend
Loews Philadelphia and the downtown Marriott
When two hundred guests are flying in, the hotel ballroom earns its place: rooms upstairs, breakfast, the mehndi in a suite on Friday, the ceremony downstairs on Saturday. Hotel ballrooms need the most planning from us — flat light, low ceilings in places — so we scout the property in advance and take the couple outside for portraits; Rittenhouse Square and the river trail are both minutes away.

The Merion, Cinnaminson
Fifteen minutes from Center City and, for many Philadelphia families, the real answer: a grand marble ballroom that handles 500 guests, grounds for a baraat, and a house that is comfortable with an Indian timeline. It appears in our New Jersey venues guide too, because it belongs to both cities.
The Mansion on Main Street, Voorhees
A ballroom venue with a large outdoor courtyard that turns into a natural baraat stage, and a team that has hosted plenty of Gujarati and Punjabi weddings. Neutral interiors that take décor well; even light that makes the speeches easy.

Timing a Philadelphia day
Philadelphia's ceremonies tend to run in the morning and the receptions late, with a gap in the afternoon that families use for rest. We use it for portraits. If your venue is in Center City, that gap is when the streets are quietest and the light is at its best on the stone — an hour between two and four in the afternoon gives us more than a whole evening of flash.
